Tai Chi Walking Ads Scam Warning

The “Tai Chi Walking” ads dominating social media are deliberate scams and billing traps. They heavily use AI-generated voices, deepfakes, and heavily altered images to make exaggerated promises like melting belly fat or building six-pack abs in days without dietary changes. These fraudulent campaigns are primarily designed to steal your money through hidden subscription models or malicious malware.

How the Scams Work

These ads primarily use two different predatory tactics to target unsuspecting victims:

  • The Subscription Trap: Many of these ads direct you to sketchy fitness apps (such as MadMuscles). Signing up for a “cheap” or “free” trial immediately enrolls you in expensive, recurring monthly charges that are notoriously difficult to cancel.
  • The Malware/Data Trap: Another variant invites you to join a “free local Tai Chi group” on social media. Once you engage, scammers will message or call you and trick you into downloading malicious apps. These fraudulent apps can install malware to steal banking details and drain your accounts.

Warning Signs of the Scam

  • Unrealistic Claims: Ads promising extreme weight loss (e.g., losing 20+ kg in a few weeks) or muscle building in older adults without gym work.
  • AI-Generated Content: Look for videos featuring unnaturally muscular, AI-generated actors, distorted hands, or bizarre, poorly synched voiceovers (e.g., a stereotypical accent that switches mid-sentence).
  • No Official Store Downloads: Any link asking you to download a fitness app outside of the official Apple App Store or Google Play Store is highly likely to be malware.
  • Fake Testimonials: Videos that flash a tiny, hard-to-read “AI-generated actors, story is provided for entertainment purposes only” disclaimer.

Authentic Tai Chi vs. The Scam

While the advertised programs are fraudulent, authentic Tai Chi itself is a highly respected, legitimate mind-body practice.

  • Real Benefits: Tai Chi is known to improve balance, prevent falls, reduce joint pain, and lower stress (cortisol).
  • The Reality: It is not a rapid fat-loss solution, nor does it build bulky muscle.
  • How to Learn: Always learn Tai Chi from a certified, in-person instructor or an established, reputable organization rather than random social media apps.
